The Ports of New York & New Jersey

  • The Port of New York and New Jersey is the gateway to one of the most concentrated and affluent consumer markets in the world. In addition to seeing 27 straight months of record volume, the New York and New Jersey ports surpassed California to become the No. 1 port of call in the country for the last four months of 2022, a position historically held by the Port of Los Angeles or the Port of Long Beach.

  • Total volume for 2022 increased by 5.7% from the prior year, with the seaport handling 9.5 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units).

  • Despite a traditionally slow period for US ports in February, the Port of New York and New Jersey managed to move 571,177 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of cargo in February 2023, surpassing West Coast rivals such as the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach by more than 83,000 TEUs and 27,000 TEUs, respectively.

  • More than $2 billion of public and private investments facilitating record growth and enabling the Port of NY and NJ to overtake Long Beach, CA as the second busiest port in the U.S. based on volumes. This was, in large part, because of investments made well before the pandemic with the dredging of local waterways and raising the Bayonne Bridge to accommodate larger ships and expanding freight rail access, which now allows trains carrying cargo from New York and New Jersey to reach multiple Midwest locations and California.

Tangible Progress

  • The $20 billion Port Wharf Replacement Program focuses on replacing mission-critical, timber-supported wharf structures vital to marine cargo activities at five port facilities. The program consists of:

O Replacement of waterfront structures over 30 years at five port facilities.

O Accommodations for the ultra or very large container carriers and multiple business                              uses (i.e., dry bulk, heavy lift, container, etc.

  • NY NJ Harbor Deepening Project involves further dredging the channels to 55 feet to allow more post-Panamax ships to call the Port of New York & New Jersey.

  • ExpressRail Port New Jersey--Completed in 2019, the final installment of the ExpressRail network that connects cargo head to key inland markets.
